Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is becoming commonly known as the “signature injury” of the and Afghanistan conflict. Brain injury, as the epilepsy community is aware, puts an individual at greater risk for epilepsy. While the symptoms of a mild case of TBI may dissipate in a matter of days or weeks, the rate at which more severe cases of TBI develop into post-traumatic epilepsy (TBE) is rapidly accelerating.
In 2008, the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles launched an initiative to partner with the Epilepsy Center at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center to provide much needed information, resources and seminars for veterans with brain injury and epilepsy.
The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles is an advocate of prevention, early intervention and proper treatment. It is our hope that through education, veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflict will be advocates for his or her own health/medical care and seek appropriate/proper treatment. The Help4Heroes Initiative will educate returning veterans and active military personnel about the high risk of mild to severe TBI by providing informational END EPILEPSY packages, educational seminars and resources.
